Management

Conflict Resolution and Negotiations

Kestrel uses the Mouton Blake Managerial Grid as the basis for the Partnership Model for conflict resolution and negotiations. On the x access of the grid is the value of the Result; on the y access is the value of the Relationship. The model is a graphic way of understanding that, to maintain a partnership, the parties have to operate in the upper right quadrant the vast majority of the time. That is to say in the range between Compromise and Collaboration. Conflict Avoidance, Accommodation, and Competition can all be appropriate in a competitive environment but Compromise and Collaboration are the essential mode for maintaining a partnership.

Kestrel uses Polarity Management as a key tool in conflict resolution and negotiation. Understanding the polarities operating is often the key to producing an extraordinary conflict resolution or negotiation result.

Another essential component is understanding the roots of conflict: roles, goals, values, perceptual differences, and cognitive dissonance. We diagnose the roots of conflicts just as we diagnose environmental conditions at a remediation site. That helps us get at the base of the conflict that a foundation for the negotiation rather than simply applying tactics and observing what works.

Kestrel serves as a strong advocate for our clients and often steps into situations where relationships are highly strained and battle lines have been drawn. In general, we’re able to help the parties get moving down a path to an effective resolution, whether they plan to have a continuing relationship or not. Our services in this area help set Kestrel apart from most other consultants.
