Many companies are planning for or developing environmental, health and safety management systems. Depending on the current needs and challenges a company faces, the motivating forces for an EH&S management system vary greatly from company to company. Some companies focus on efficient electronic communication and document management, while others focus more on collaborative process, tools and continuous improvement. Many companies are moving toward ISO 14001, and some incorporate voluntary initiatives, such as Responsible Care®.

A growing percentage of companies are recognizing the need to incorporate cost management tools and a clear process for management of change. Most struggle with a collection of paper and special-purpose software tools that result in gaps, overlaps, and heroic efforts to stay on top of EH&S issues and activities. Many are looking for ways to incorporate auditing and performance measurement in a way that helps facility staff do their jobs.

Kestrel helps define needs and lay out conceptual design options for EH&S management systems. We help plan the implementation of the systems to produce benefits from the beginning, and help with training for the cultural changes that may be needed. We often assist companies develop EH&S Management Systems as facilitators and trainers. This approach enables companies to shape the system as the master architects of their own systems, rather than watching the consultant create the system. We have found that the typical financial return for EH&S management systems is a reduction of 15% to 30% of the current Real CostTM of EH&S management.

Kestrel develops and assist clients in developing management systems to support a wide variety of operations and programs. The management systems integrate information and processes and are tailored to the needs of each client. We design systems that are practical, intuitive, flexible, and easily operated by our clients’ personnel. Information management aspects of the management systems often involve creative use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as well as web-based structures. We place an emphasis on developing ready access to relevant information in accurate, clear, and up-to-date sources. We design the information system so that different layers of information can be readily overlaid and accessed to develop instant insight into a situation or problem.

We also incorporate effective processes, including clear work instructions, schedules, standards, or performance metrics.

Kestrel incorporates tools that were first developed and have evolved from the Real Cost® technique we developed and piloted in a project for the Synthetic Organic Chemical Manufacturers Association (SOCMA) in 1998. The Real Cost® tool has undergone continual development and has been applied at manufacturing facilities with as many as 1750 employees. This tool includes activity based costing as well as measurement of business contribution of environmental, health, and safety efforts and projects.
